Episode 111 Gary Halvorson
The Met: Live in HD is a series of live opera performances transmitted to selected venues, primarily movie theaters around the world, in high-definition video, via satellite from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The first transmission was the Julie Taymor production of a condensed English-language version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, on December 30, 2006.
Veteran TV director Gary Halvorson, an accomplished classical pianist, has been the primary director of these telecasts from the beginning. His camera shots —- from the footlights to the overhead —- changed the way performances of any art have been brought to our living rooms.
Gary had directed episodes of popular TV series Friends, Everyone Loves Raymond, The Drew Carey Show, and Two and a Half Men, plus a telecast of which he is most proud, an episode for television of the popular radio program, From the Top.
